Since independence possibly we have got eight Chief ministers namely Dr Prafulla Chandra Ghosh was the first Chef Minister of West Bengal after independence. Dr.Ghosh was a brilliant student of Science and was an educationist .He was in the office for a short period .He was a bachelor.
Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy
took oath in 1948 and he was our second Chief minister .He was the most colourful character. He was an exceptionally brilliant person. He was a world famous physician and surprisingly was both from medicine and Surgery and the same is rarely found. There are plenty of stories about his treatment. He did lot of miracles. Even when he was the chief minister he used to treat patients at his residence in the morning. He took charge at a very crucial time i.e. just after partition and large number of refugees came from East Bengal and the same created Socio-economic problems and resulted tremendous food Crisis.
He successfully implemented various projects like State transport corporation,Haringhata milk project , Durgapur Steel projects etc. He developed two cities Dugapur and Kalyani and two towns Habra and Ashoknagar. Ashoknagar was for refugees only. About ten thousand two-rooms houses were constructed and the same were handed over to the refugees at a nominal Price. This great man was also unmarried and died on 1St July 1962 and incidentally that day was his birthday.
Prafulla Chandra Sen was our third Chief minister. During his tenure there was tremendous food crisis .Prafulla Chandra was a freedom fighter .He was also a bachelor and left office in 1967.
Ajoy Mukherjee was our fourth Chief minister .He was a freedom fighter and was from Midnapore.
Sidharta Sankar Roy was our fifth chief minister. He was a Barrister and grand son of Desha bandhu Chitta Ranjan Das.
Jyoti Bose was our sixth Chief minister .He was also a Barrister but non practising . He continued for a maximum period more than two decades.
Buddhadeb Bhattacharya was our seventh Chief minister.
Mamata Banerjee is our eighth chief minister and first woman Chief minister.She is at present in office.
